Social media can be such a useful tool sometimes! Yes, we do tend to lose a lot of time on it, not all of it as productive as it should be, but sometimes it also provides us with very interesting topics. Such was the case of the Wild Romania documentary written and presented by Charlie Ottley. I literally just stumbled upon it yesterday and it caught my eye for two reasons. First, it was about my home country and it seemed really nicely done at a first glance. Second, I’ve met Charlie, a few months ago, at an event organised by the Romanian Cultural Institute in London. So when I got home I had a proper look at it and decided it deserves a blog post! I’ve done a short post about my road trip while home this last summer (which you can read here), but this, being filmed, will help you get a better view of the beauties hidden in Romania.
Going under the motto “Help us protect Europe’s last great wilderness and safeguard Romania’s natural heritage for future generations!”, the people behind the documentary show us breath-taking, but not very known mountains and forests of Carpathia. Home to bears, wolves and the elusive lynx, this is perhaps the last great wilderness in Europe, seen as never before. Charlie provides a unique insight into the scenic beauty and rich culture of the region, exploring its chequered history from the mystical ruins of the ancient Dacian civilisations to its medieval communities, the heritage of which survives intact to this day. He meets a range of colourful characters including shepherds, artists, eco-warriors, craftsmen, trackers, even a Count.

Wild Carpathia is a stunning documentary about a little-known part of Europe, which I, among my friends and people who I meet, always advertise. It’s a great feeling to see that someone has actually managed to capture that. Also, it is very good to see that various well-known Romanians, such as Loredana Groza (singer) and Horia Tecau (tennis-man) have join the cause and offer clear support.
