Deadpool Review

Is it a superhero movie? Is it a love story? What about a horror or comedy? Deadpool is neither and all of those. It’s a Marvel universe movie with quite a twist. Here we are, 7 years since X-men: Wolverine came out, finally enjoying this full Ryan Reynolds character in action. And we get an upgraded version, ladies and gents. Not necessarily not as freaky looking, but a tad more real and more in line with the essence of the character.

For a shorter and straight forward opinion, together with the trailer, check out the vlog below:

So what is the film about? Deadpool tells the original story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds). Wade, a good looking guy with a sarcastic sense of humour, seems to have finally gotten the best out of life when Vanessa (Morena Baccarin) becomes part of his it. deadpool-wade-wilson-going-into-surgery-1024x682However, life always slaps us when it gets the chance, and soon, Wade’s fairytale bubble is burst by the news of advanced stage cancer.

The news make Wilson take the decision to allow himself to be subjected to a rogue experiment, conducted by Ajax/Francis (Ed Skrein), which, after a series of torture methods, leaves Wade with accelerated healing powers and a clear target he wants to terminate. He adopts the alter ego Deadpool, who seems not to know how to give up, and hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life.

However, Deadpool isn’t the only one with superpowers in this equation. Ajax has his own very high tolerance to pain and his side kick, Angel (Gina Carano), benefits from superhuman strength. Which is why, luckily, Deadpool gets his team: two X-Men, because apparently “it’s like the studio couldn’t afford more” – Colossus (voiced by Stefan Kapicic) and his trainee, Negasonic Teenage Warhead (Brianna Hildebrand), a blind landlady and a not in to fighting but there to always state the obvious bartender/friend.

The movie underlines stereotypes with every step it takes. The initial intro, presented while a slow motion Matrix-like scene goes on in the background, includes: a hot chick, a British villain, a CGI character and directed by an overpaid tool. Hear, hear to putting the things into perspective! And they don’t stop here. We get glimpses at reality with “Cool, which one: McAvoy or Stewart?” when Colossus wants to take Deadpool to see the professor and lines from those classic love movies “I’m just a girl standing in front of a boy…”, for those of you lost right now, that’s a line from Notting Hill.

Deadpool is also different because he actually interacts with the audience. He narrates the story and throws in comments from time to time. He also shushes other characters when they interrupt his

storytelling moment.

By now, if you are interested in this movie, you have seen the various clips and trailers that came out. And sure, those are funny, but those are just small insights in how Wade Wilson is. Not sure if only to prove Francis wrong, or because it’s his coping-with-everything mechanism, he doesn’t lose his sense of humour no matter what and you will be grateful for it! Even if we are talking about moments of small mundane things we all get to do on a daily basis.

Now, Ryan Reynolds is absolutely brilliant in the role! Not sure how many of you realise how hard it can be to actually get the audience to back you up and to correctly feel every string you play when they don’t see your facial expressions. Wit and irony are sometimes achieved together with an arched eyebrow or a certain stare, which in his red costume you can’t actually see. However, the tone of his voice and the movements, together with an incredible charisma and exuberance, help him deliver a spot on character.

You will get violent scenes, a tad of nudity, some blood here and there and a lot of talking, but considering the general funny lines that is not annoying. Deadpool stays close to the classic plot, but adds different twists and turns along the way which make the action enjoyable and varied. It’s witty and safely build. Eventually, Deadpool will probably succeed to make the Marvel universe more accessible and that in itself is great. It’s a film that has a bit for everyone and will, without a shade of doubt, make your evening brilliantly entertaining.
